Student Association fills representative vacancy
October 2, 2006 —
Dialogue concerning the election of a new Student Association representative highlighted discussion at Monday's SA house meeting.
Ashley Verner was elected in the SA main election last spring, but resigned in June, creating a vacant position in SA.
"We waited until now," said President Andy Suszek, "because we [wanted to] avoid adding people during the summer because it is more fair if everyone is around."
Vanessa Gayle would eventually be chosen, but two other students - Shane Williamson and Thad McGiness - were present to be interviewed. Each was invited to state reasons for their desire to join SA, as well as field questions from current members.
Gayle alluded to her strong work ethic as one of several reasons why she belongs in SA. "I feel that I am genuinely focused and a passionate, hard worker," she said.
Gayle went on to cite a quote from Malcolm X that she believed encapsulated her drive to serve in student government: "By any means necessary."
McGiniess, who was interviewed after Gayle, is involved with Alternative Breaks, and hoped to use the group working skills he has gained to help improve the University.
"I really love it here," McGiniess said. "I want to be involved to help the University become the best it can be."
Williamson, who was interviewed last, hoped his position in SA would help him in a future career in politics. He also said there should be a push for more student activity on campus.
"SA represents all students, not just on campus, but commuters as well," Williamson said. "We as a student organization should really push student activity among other students on campus."
This year's SA freshmen representatives have been announced. They are Becky Griffin, Sarah Leslie, Ryan Kanine, Sienna Wallace, and David Stevens.
