Track teams prepare for conference championships

SVSU brought its full men's and women's track teams to the Jack Skoog Open at Central Michigan University on Friday night, earning 21 top-three finishes, including six firsts.
The men dominated the 60-meter hurdles, taking the top four spots in the race. Freshman Sam Tilmon won the event in 8.52 seconds and was followed by freshman Kyle McDaniel, senior Max Masters, and freshman Charlie Richards. The four Cardinals were .23 seconds apart, while their next closest competitor finished .55 seconds behind them.
Senior Chris Baranek took first in the 400-meter dash in 49.57 seconds, while the SVSU 'A' team, sophomore Justin Thomason, Richards, sophomore Kyle Dengler, and senior Mario Guerrero, won the 4x400 meter in 3:25.93. Junior Matt Masters won the weight throw with a distance of 40 feet, 11.75 inches.
Sophomore Becca Rudey won the mile run in 5 minutes, 7.88 seconds, and sophomore Leighann Dowell took the 60-meter hurdles in 9.12 seconds.
Senior Adam Roach ran the mile in 4:11.03 for second place, while junior Brandon Johnson took third in the 3000-meter in 8:50.63. The Saginaw Track Club 'A' team - Baranek, freshman Erik Lunning, junior Ryan Norman, and freshman Ben Richards - took third in the 4x400, and Guerrero cleared 6 feet, 8 inches for third in the high jump. Sophomore Eltaro Hooper jumped 20 feet, 8 inches for third in the long jump.
Freshman Sjonne Mitchell finished third in the 60-meter dash in 8.07 seconds and took third in the 200-meter in 26.45, while senior Mandie Gallier ran a season-best 58.28 for second place in the 400-meter. Senior Lisa Fair finished third behind Dowell in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.34 seconds, and the SVSU 'B' 4x400 team - sophomore Courtney Kotewa, Dowell, redshirt freshman Emily Plott, and sophomore Ashley Coppens - finished second with a time of 4:20.67. Dowell also took third in the triple jump, leaping 34' 4". Senior Mary Jo Pouillon finished third in the shot put with 45' 9.25", while teammate junior Ashley Bishop took second in the weight throw with 53' 7.75".
The meet was a tune-up for the GLIAC Indoor Championship, being held in Findlay, Ohio this weekend. The teams begin on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. and start back up on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
