Amendment encourages important leadership

Editorial

Throughout this school year, SVSU's Student Association has taken praiseworthy action time and time again, ranging from alcohol abuse awareness to the Battle of the Valleys. Add another to the list, as a resolution sponsored by President Armen Hratchian amended SA's 2004-2005 budget to essentially give each representative $1,000 to use as they see fit. As simple and fun as that may sound, the importance of it was underlined thoroughly.

The purpose of the amendment was not to award each representative for being good people; instead, it encourages them to step up and become leaders by themselves, taking the initiative for a program of their choosing and having $1,000 to contribute to it.

The line of thinking said that some of the representatives had great ideas, but either funds were tight or not enough support was given to each idea in order for the funds to be allocated. This amendment takes care of the problem, and is the ideal solution: giving representatives the money they need to get the programs they want done started.

It's often said that leadership skills are tough to teach, but at the very least, this amendment allows these representatives' skills to grow.
