Jardine honored as SVSU Club Athlete of the Year at banquet
April 11, 2011 —
Spencer Jardine never saw it coming.
Jardine was surprised to hear he was nominated for SVSU Club Athlete of the Year.
He was even more surprised to find out he had won
“It was a great feeling to hear my name called,” Jardine said. “I kind of look at it as being the Heisman Trophy of our sport and it’s a pretty good accomplishment to win it.”
Marissa Hazard, Bryan Janick and Ashley Schiefler joined Jardine for the award banquet held on the second floor of Curtiss Hall.
“Everyone at my table was cheering for me,” Jardine said. “I had a big smile on my face.”
Jardine received an email requesting him to pick up an invite to an event although he had no idea that he was also a nominee.
“I was surprised because I thought Jon Tibaudo was going to win for everything he has done for the hockey team,” Jardine said. “I was pretty surprised.”
An unknown teammate nominated Jardine, along with a faculty member. Jardine was honored to be invited to the banquet.
“It made me feel good that my hard work over the years has paid off,” Jardine said. “It was a very nice gesture.”
While the award is only given to one athlete, Jardine was quick to credit his teammates.
“Without a doubt this would not have been possible without my teammates backing me up,” Jardine said. “They definitely had a big hand in helping me receive this award.”
Jardine has been a part of a team that advanced to the national championship game as well as multiple final-four appearances. The award is one thing he won’t soon forget.
“This year was a lot of fun,” Jardine said. “There were a lot of good memories.”
The Cardinals’ season came to an end in the final four of the 2011 national tournament with a 2-1 loss to Central Michigan University. Despite the loss, Jardine was happy with the way the season played out.
“It was a great season,” Jardine said. “We came up a little short in achieving our goal but we have some pieces in place that will help us next year.”
