Men still winless after loss
September 12, 2005 —
The SVSU men's soccer team is still winless on the season after a 1-0 loss to second-ranked Southern Illinois Edwardsville yesterday. With a rough GLIAC schedule right around the corner, the Cardinals are now 0-1-2.
The Cougars defense proved to be as advertised as they blanked the Cardinals for their fifth straight shutout of the season. The Cougars outshot the Cardinals 11-10 in the game, and held them without a shot for the entire first half.
On Sept. 1, the Cardinals took on Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio. After two halves and two overtime periods, the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Senior Cale Wasserman got the scoring off to a fast start with his goal at the 3:00 mark of the first half.
A costly penalty by the Cardinals let Tiffin get the equalizer on a penalty kick at 28:00 of the first half. Tiffin scored another one at the 69:00 mark of the second half, and then it was junior Ryan Norman that scored the goal at 85:00 in the second half to tie the game.
Sophomore Eric Carnes made 12 saves in the net for the Cardinals. It was a physical game, as there were seven yellow cards dished out and 50 total fouls on the afternoon.
On Aug. 26, the Cardinals traveled to Indianapolis to take on Indianapolis University for a game under the lights in front of a record crowd of 417 at Key Stadium. The Cardinals defense could not stop the Greyhounds' Eric Nance, as he scored two of hit team's three goals and tallied six shots, while the entire Cardinals team could only get off four shots.
The Greyhounds totaled three goals on 23 shots on their way to a shutout. Carnes made seven saves in net for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals began their season the day before with a game against St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana. The Cardinals came out on the wrong end of a 2-1 score to drop their first game of the season.
Senior Jared Riepma scored the first Cardinals goal of the season at the 74:59 mark of the second half. Again, a costly penalty by the Cardinals helped St. Joseph's score the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick with two and a half minutes to go in the game. On the evening, the Cardinals managed 14 shots, compared to 11 by the Pumas.
Wasserman led the charge with five shots. Carnes made five saves in net for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals will be in action at home Wednesday against Olivet University at 6 p.m. The game will be their last non-conference game before they begin their rigorous GLIAC schedule, which begins with a road trip to Pennsylvania on Friday and Saturday to play both Mercyhurst College and Gannon University.
