Cardinal Sins sponsoring Poetry Slam, open-mic
Winner of event will be published in Fall edition of literary magazine; students, faculty invited to attend
September 12, 2005 —
Cardinal Sins, SVSU's student-run literary magazine, will be hosting a poetry slam Thursday in the Cardinal Cage.
The event, which is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m., gives students and faculty alike the opportunity to share their work during an open-mic session or compete in the slam itself, where poets are judged and compete for cash prizes.
The winner of the Slam will have their work published in the Fall edition of Sins.
The open-mic portion of the evening is set to last between a half-hour and 45 minutes. Those reading will be limited to two poems with time limits implemented for each piece.
The slam itself will begin following the open-mic segment. Individuals are limited to one piece with a five-minute time limit. The poems will be evaluated by a panel of five judges, two professors and three Sins staff members. The poems will be judged on poetic element, auditory element and performance.
"Poetry itself is about art," says Mat Easterwood, Sins co-assistant editor. "The slam is a way for people to get with that auditory level and to reach a wider audience."
While the audience is often composed of fellow readers, those who wish to go and not read are also encouraged to attend.
"The crowd at a poetry slam is always fantastic," says Amee Schmidt, the other co-assistant editor. "Everybody who gets up there gets a huge round of applause. Everyone who participates and goes to poetry slams totally appreciates and respects the fact that a person is getting up there."
The Sins staff expects this year's slam to be successful and attributes the anticipated success to the poetry slam environment.
"I don't care if it's 20 people or if it's 70 people," Schmidt says, "as long as people show up and they have a good time."
In addition to the poetry slam, the Sins staff will also be promoting the deadline for submissions to the Fall 2005 issue of the magazine. The deadline is Monday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m., and submissions are to be turned in at Evening Services.
