One of my friends put it this way: “Leggings are for your legs, not your butt. If they were for your butt, they’d be called buttings.”
I definitely think there is a legitimate use for leggings. They are great to go under things such as skirts or dresses, but it’s a pet peeve of mine when girls wear them as a substitute.
Basically, leggings are just a thicker version of tights. If you wouldn’t wear tights alone, why would you do that with leggings?
Think of a time when you saw someone wear something that was too small for them. It doesn’t even have to be a larger person. It could simply be someone who wore something a couple sizes smaller than what they should have. You didn’t want to see that.
Along the same lines, many people don’t want to see the outline of a girl’s butt, the result of only wearing leggings and some sort of top.
I think a good general guideline for leggings is that at least the butt should be covered. This isn’t too unreasonable. Not only does it help those of us who really don’t want to see that, but it also helps prevent people that you don’t want checking you out from doing exactly that.
I think that often times, when girls dress in the morning they are thinking about all the people they want to see them in that outfit. Let’s face it, girls dress with a complete awareness of the amount of attention certain outfits will bring them.
But rather than only considering the reactions of people you know, think about total strangers. Girls who dress to impress their boyfriends aren’t always considering what elderly men think when they see them in the same attire.
So, the next time you are tempted to don a pair of leggings, think about what your grandpa would think if he saw you in them. Or better yet, think about what your neighbor’s grandpa would think. I believe I would find it was a tad awkward.
Now, there is a new form of leggings called jeggings. Basically, leggings met skinny jeans and cross- bred, and the result was named jeggings. I think this just makes the whole thing worse. Now girls are being encouraged to think of leggings as pants because of jeggings.
It’s just as comfortable if not more so to wear regular jeans. Jeggings are just harder to put on and take off. Yes, they look like jeans, but they are still super tight and clingy to a girl’s butt. I think they are just as bad as leggings.
Leggings are not pants, and neither are jeggings.
