Till's life to be honored
July 19, 2005 —
Author W. James Richardson will be the keynote speaker at SVSU's "Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Emmett Till's Death" Tuesday, Aug. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Alan W. Ott Auditorium of the Regional Education Center.
Richardson will discuss his novel, "The Ghost of Emmett Till." The presentation will also include essay and poetry readings by local students.
A native of Chicago, Emmett Till was killed while on vacation in Mississippi on Aug. 28, 1955 after whistling at the wife of a local white shopkeeper. His death outraged black community leaders throughout the United States, and is considered a catalyst of the Civil Rights Movement. The men accused of murdering Till were acquitted at trial.
The lecture is open to the public. Admission is free.
