State Rep to give O'Neill lecture

Michigan Congressman Dale E. Kildee will speak at Saginaw Valley State University Monday, April 11 at 7 pm in the Performing Arts Theatre.  His speech, "Civility in Politics," is part of the James E. O'Neill Jr. Memorial Lecture Series.

Kildee was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976 and has remained in Congress for each succeeding term.  The Flint Democrat currently serves as a senior member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and as a member of the House Committee on Resources.

Prior to taking federal office, Kildee served in the Michigan State Senate from 1974 to 1976 and the Michigan House of Representatives for five terms, starting in 1964. Prior to taking political office, he worked as a teacher at the University of Detroit High School and Flint Central High School.

The James E. O'Neill Jr. Memorial Lecture Series was established in 2003 to honor the late Saginaw educator, legislator and community servant.  Co-sponsored by SVSU and the Field Neurosciences Institute of Saginaw, the series is intended to dynamically reflect O'Neill's passion for excellence in government, education and the neurosciences, and to provide opportunities for people to learn about public service from individuals who have unselfishly contributed to the betterment of the human condition.

Kildee will be the second speaker in the annual series.  Former Michigan Attorney General Frank Kelley gave the first lecture in September 2003.

O'Neill was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1966 and served there for 28 years. After retiring from the legislature in 1994, he worked for SVSU as a consultant for government relations and public affairs.

Prior to his service in Lansing, O'Neill was a teacher and administrator in the Hemlock School District. He was elected to the Michigan Education Hall of Fame in 1993. O'Neill also served on the board of directors for the Field Neurosciences Institute.  He passed away December 31, 2002 at age 73.
