Students score well at forensics competitions

Five SVSU students placed during two recent Michigan Intercollegiate Speech Leagues forensics tournaments. Three took home top honors.
Jackie Kapustka, a communication and theatre major from Sterling Heights, placed first in dramatic interpretation at the annual State Novice Tournament at Western Michigan University March 5. At the same tournament, open only to first year competitors, Kevan Umberfield, a freshman from Freeland, captured first place in persuasion at the novice tournament.
Megan Lang, a communication major from Columbus, Mich., competed in prose.
Candace Rau from Saginaw took top novice in poetry honors at the State Forensics Tournament at Central Michigan University March 12.
Samantha Merchant from Birch Run placed fourth in after dinner speaking.
SVSU students have competed in the Michigan Intercollegiate Speech Leagues forensics tournaments for five consecutive years. The team is coached by Amy Pierce, SVSU assistant professor of communication, and Brandon Miller, SVSU instructor of communication.
