Goals set for coming school year
August 24, 2007 —
With the beginning of the fall semester only days away, Student Association has begun setting goals and planning events for its 2007-2008 academic year.
Of those goals, SA underscores getting students - both on-campus and commuters - more involved with campus organizations and activities as especially important. President Jeremiah Stanghini encourages students to seek out the aid of Student Life to help them become more active.
"Go to Student Life," says Stanghini. "The workers there are knowledgeable and can help anyone get in contact with any Registered Student Organization that they would want to talk to for whatever reason that they would need to talk to them."
To get more commuters involved, SA plans on increasing its involvement with the Commuter Advisory Board, which works toward planning events with commuter schedules in mind. SA hopes this will help boost the participation of commuter students in campus organizations, as well as their attendance to on-campus events.
Also, SA says it would like to become more available to students. Steps are being planned to further associate SA representatives with the rest of the student body by staging more events that encourage interaction between reps and other students. Also, an open SA VSpace site is planned on being developed and opened to all students.
Stanghini says his personal focus will center on promoting lifestyles that benefit students and the environment. This includes encouraging environmentally friendly or "green" events on campus, as well as raising awareness about recycling. SA also wants to educate students on healthy diets, and has even suggested that the organization make an attempt to ban trans-fat from campus.
SA says it would also like to boost awareness of available services provided through on-campus offices by promoting them more directly to students. An effort is also being planned toward promoting all SVSU athletics in order to gain student support and increase attendance at all events.
SA has already planned a few events, scheduled for the opening days of the fall semester. Along with the University Residence Association and Program Board, SA is bringing in a comedian tonight at 9 p.m. in the President's Courtyard.
In addition, all freshmen are invited to join SA, URA and Program Board for a presentation by each organization's president in which they will speak on the purposes of their respective organizations. Also, all three will have representative applications available, and a prize raffle has been planned. The event will take place at 8 p.m. on Sunday in the Multi-Purpose Room.
