Ryder Center job about more than swiping ID cards

If you regularly visit the Ryder Center - be it to work out or go to class - chances are very good that Matt Buchanan has swiped your card.

The 21 year old from Mt. Pleasant has worked at the Ryder Center for two years and, though his job responsibilities include taking cards, the junior does a great deal more than just swipe plastic.

Besides verifying that all visitors are either students or members, Buchanan is in charge of recording racquetball reservations, taking telephone calls and answering any questions on Ryder Center events or the campus in general.

Buchanan was able to get his job at the Ryder Center with the help of a contact through his Business Fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi. The fraternity provides Buchanan with a number of benefits as it enables him to meet people on campus, network and also provides a nice addition to his resume.

Beyond that, Delta Sigma Pi keeps Buchanan busy with numerous activities, fundraisers and community service events.

When not busy with the fraternity or working at the Ryder Center, Buchanan says he enjoys hanging out with friends and watching movies.

Buchanan is also a big sports fan, citing March Madness as one of his favorite sporting events. Lately, the North Carolina fan has enjoyed relishing in the Tar Heels victory over Michigan State in the NCAA tournament.

Once his Business Management degree has been completed, Buchanan hopes to head off to somewhere a little warmer to earn his MBA.

From there, he says he would like to pursue retail management or restaurant/hotel management. By working in one of these industries, Buchanan hopes to get some experience under his belt to help land the ultimate job.

Ideally, Buchanan hopes that such a job is available somewhere on the Atlantic Coast, preferably North Carolina. After all, that would be the perfect place to work for a Tar Heels fan.
