SA vacancy to remain

During last week's Student Association House meeting, two candidates were present to interview for two open seats. However, SA chose to only appoint sophomore Isaac Hudson and not fellow sophomore Eric Skibbe, thereby leaving the remaining seat vacant.

SA president Andy Suszek stated that this not the first time a seat has been left open in the House. Although Suszek does not have a vote in the matter, he did explain that this is not an unprecedented event, and under such conditions SA continued to run successfully for the remainder of the year.

"I can't speak for why they voted the way they did, but I can say that this is something that has precedent," said Suszek.

Parliamentarian Aaron Brown reiterated it was the House's decision to leave the seat vacant, and went on to say that the decision is acceptable through SA's bylaws, which state that when a position is open they are to post applications in the Student Life Center as well as the SA office. However, if for any reason a candidate does not meet SA's standards, they are not required appoint him or her to the position, even if the student is the only candidate applying for it.

"According to our bylaws, we have to post the position for two weeks, to allow students to apply," said Brown. "It is then up to the House to choose the best suited candidate or candidates. There is nothing written or precedent that says because we have two openings that we must fill both positions. The House always has the two options of voting 'Yes' or 'No Confidence.'"

Suszek also said that no further interviews would be held to fill the position. Due to time constraints and the fact that there is no real pressing need to have the position filled, Suszek said that the position would be filled in the fall.

"By the time we could elect someone to fill it, it nearly would be nearly spring break," he said, "and by then it would be close to the time for students to turn in their end of the year applications."

SA will be holding their next general House meeting on Feb. 19 in the Alumni Lounge. Students can learn more about SA, as well as contact the representatives, through their Web site: svsu.edu/studentassociation.
