Colleges should focus spending on education

As the education industry booms, the amount of students seeking advanced degrees in the humanities in particular and the liberal arts in general has skyrocketed. According to a review in the Chronicle of Higher Education, in his book How the University Works, Marc Bousquet argues that colleges and universities across America take advantage of graduate students in those disciplines. »

Stop-loss not created by Bush

In the review of the movie Stop-Loss in the March 31 edition, Matthew C. Easterwood describes a stop-loss as a "back-door draft President Bush created." Regardless of your opinion of the movie, the war, or the president it is important to get the facts straight when reporting. Stop-losses were created in the 1970s, well before either Bush served as president. »

Vandalism a problem on campus

After speaking with a variety of people, it is clear that the amount of vandalism and unnecessary destruction on campus is higher this year than it has been in any of the other three years that I've been a student at SVSU. »

Upcoming employment fair an opportunity worth pursuing

This Friday, over 100 employers will be on campus in the Ryder Center attending the University-wide Employment and Networking Fair from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Once again, our list of employers that will be recruiting is incredible. But don't take my word for it, come out and see for yourself. »

Incompetence to blame for technology problems

As you might have read in the last issue of the Vanguard, SVSU's technology woes are far from over. The same problems that continue to creep up year after year are showing no signs of relenting. I still have no idea if these concerns are reaching third-floor Wickes - the place where problems like these should be discussed, worked on, and solved. I'm starting to wonder if when a system goes down on campus, it's become so common that it's not treated with importance. There's no reason to believe otherwise. Incompetence. »

Unpaid internships are unfair

As summer approaches, so do internships that many college students will pursue. While I'm not one of those students, I have friends who are. What's unfortunate is that many of these internships are not paid. »
