Have you heard about the recent fiasco at neighboring Central Michigan University? It’s quite compelling, and while it doesn’t involve SVSU directly, it certainly raises some interesting questions regarding public universities, professors, and student rights. It all revolves around the issue of allowing CMU professor Gary Peters to live off of tax-payer benefits while running for Congress.
The latest development of the saga, as reported on local television news, state-wide radio, and national blogs, is the assault of a CMU student at the hands of interim Dean of the College of Humanities and Social and Behavorial Sciences, Pamela Gates. The student, Dennis G. Lennox II, was attempting to serve Dean Gates with a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request concerning electronic messages between Professor Peters and the University. Lennox, who is the spokesman for Student Against Gary Peters, a group that takes issue with Peters’ employment at CMU, served the FOIA request in Dean Gates’ office lobby. After initially refusing to accept the request, and hiding behind her office door while on the telephone with CMU’s attorney, Gates emerged and accepted the request only to see Lennox wielding a video camera. An irate Gates is then seen on video swatting the camera and demanding that Lennox leave her office. »
Good design in print media does at least two things: it gives readers what they want, and it looks good while doing it. »
Costly indeed.
Even though the Plain White T's concert was something short of a stunning success, Program Board put together what it concluded would be the best big show for SVSU students on Tuesday, and it's hard to fault them for the outcome of the event. Students just didn't let them know what they wanted. And to top it all off, it seems as though the Coffeehouse series will be cancelled, too. »

I was recently invited to join a group on Facebook entitled "Bring Dane Cook to SVSU." This isn't the first time that I've heard this. »

Kudos for Alie Neumeyer's article, "Christian Groups Show Unity."
There are many Christian groups represented in the student population: Chi Alpha, Kappa Epsilon, Intervarsity, Campus Crusade, Navigators, YWAM, Ecumenical Campus Ministry, and so forth. All of them with 95 percent of elements in common and 5 percent of differences, just enough to spice the mix and make it interesting. »
This is my fourth year at SVSU, and the more I think about it, the more I realize that four years is a really long time. This is particularly evident when I consider everything that's happened to the University in that time. »
After nearly seven years in the White House, President George Bush has exercised his right to veto bills passed by Congress only four times. His most recent veto has me wondering why he didn't stop at three. »
"Seriously? Him? Why?"
Those are the remarks I've heard when speaking with SVSU students about Al Gore winning the Nobel Peace Prize. »
