With millions of dollars being funneled down south to Hurricane Katrina victims, the Red Cross and Salvation Army, the nation's two most preeminent charities, have gone on record the past week stating their fears that 'donor fatigue' will eventually leave many charities out in the cold. With so much being donated to the victims of Katrina, and now Hurricane Rita, many local organizations are feeling the sting resulting from the few dollars that were available heading elsewhere. »
The Pledge of Allegiance debate is again gaining strength, this time in California where a District Court Judge ruled that public schools cannot lead students in a pledge which forces them to say the words, "under God." And while many are furious with the decision, saying the phrase is only meant to unify Americans-not promote religion-it was the right decision to make nonetheless. »
While meandering about the Cards' Party two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet two women from the Tri-Cities Planned Parenthood, which is located right here in Saginaw. I was relieved to see them at the Cards' Party giving out useful information to college students. Unfortunately, some would prefer that Planned Parenthood did not exist. »
This past week, I was assigned to cover the Dining Services Food Forum, and as I sat at the meeting and scanned through the attending faces, I was disturbed to see that all the usual folks were there. That's not to say that the usual faces are bad, but just that they are habitually the only ones that ever attend. It is uncommon for a student to show up to one of the forums if they don't represent some sort of organization or hold a position where they need to attend. Rarely does Joe Student - or Josephine Student if you please - step through the Multi-purpose Room doors just because they have a question or want to find out what's going on. Because of this, I am disappointed in the student body at SVSU and feel that, by and large, students are passing on opportunities like these to let their voices be heard. »
