Defining values as important as setting high expectations for youth

spoke about individual choices and
societal priorities affecting today’s
young people. In his book, “The
Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two
Fates,” Moore tells of man with whom
he shared more than a name: Both men
came from similar neighborhoods,
both were raised by single mothers
and both were faced with life choices
that would shape the kind of men they
were to become. »

year, so cheers to a semi-successful

Budget threatens students, state

Shared sacrifice. Tightening the
belt. Efficiency. Each has been
used to describe Gov. Rick
Snyder’s proposed budget.
Social workers, teachers, police
and firefighters are all but assured
to be laid off as cuts will be made
to education, human services and
revenue sharing. These cuts are part of
Snyder’s campaign promise to make
Michigan’s tax climate more appealing
to businesses. If successful, the changes
will result in job creation, which in
turn will increase revenue to the state
through corporate and individual
income and property taxes. »

Taking advantage of snow days

Staying up all night, posting status
updates along the way about the
undying anticipation of the potential
breaking news. From just a little
bit of snow, this is the effect snow has
on many college students. These events
that get Facebook feeds crowded with
comments regarding school the next day
can be a big relief on a college student’s
workload. But are snow days really all
that beneficial to a student? »
