The Vanguard Vision
Student “A” was ready to register for his senior classes, but asking his boss for a shift break to register did not go over well. Now, he is waiting for late registration, hoping someone will drop the last classes he needs for graduation. Student “B” was in English class during her designated registration time. Her professor would not permit her to leave class without a tardy or absence on her record, so she stayed. After class, she found her top course picks unavailable. The classes Student “C” needed for next semester were all full before he was even eligible to register. These anecdotes describe the kinds of distressing issues that can arise for students during registration; they show that registration woes are not always the result of student apathy (or laziness). »
T wisted fate has given me a little bit of a twisted neck, and I’ve been forced to seek help from the people I before considered to be black magicians — chiropractors. As I walked in to the waiting room last week, I came across a man whose image of the world would qualify as science fiction, and I thought to myself, “Self,” (because that’s what I call myself) “what news is this man watching?” And it clicked with me at that moment that, in light of a few recent events, I’m not sure news is worth much anymore. »

Every day, I see a news headline about how Michigan has one of the worst business atmospheres in the United States Accompanying the story are ways to make it better, mainly by cutting the amount of taxes that businesses pay. So I did what I usually do when I come across statements that I feel are exaggerated or false: I jumped online and researched this claim. To be fair, I will issue a disclaimer and say that, as with all things, statistics can lie, so whatever you read here take with a grain of salt. »
I have written for this paper for nearly three years and never done an opinion piece. As any of my friends could inform you, this is not because I lack for opinions, but because I feel that love is too abstract, that politics is so volatile, and that disliking small, yippy dogs (“puntables,” to my family) would get me a lot of Paris Hilton-clone hate mail. However, between happenings on campus lately and our wonderful A&E editor’s grumpy suggestions, I may have stumbled on to something I’d like to talk about. »
