MIP charges not doing much to change college cultures

For as long as alcohol is a part of the college culture involving a significant percentage of the student population, the legal drinking age debate will continue on campuses. »

Hatred for health care reform too dramatic

I have paid taxes since the age of 12, when I started my own lawn-care business and made more than $2,500 per year. Since then, I have held held eight different jobs for which I paid taxes. I have insurance through BlueCross BlueShield. I am protected by the police and military and if my house catches on fire, the fire department will come put it out. I intend to go to law school and then pay a lot more taxes. I vote. »

Tax revenues providing essential services despite anger over hikes

During the last year, a contentious debate has emerged over the role of government in our lives. This debate is focused primarily on government spending and how it should pay for its programs. The two events responsible for this movement were the bailout of large banks by the Troubled Asset Relief Program (or TARP) in December 2008, and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (better known as the stimulus package), passed in February 2009. Regardless of how you feel about either of these programs, and how effective they have been, they have increased our spending and national debt to record levels. Because of this, a new wave of anger toward Congress and President Obama has arisen. This resentment has trickled down to state level as well, as
Michigan has been mired in its own
recession for the last eight years. »

Guatemala service project a life-changing experience

Eleven SVSU students, including myself, traveled to Guatemala through Alternative Breaks this month where we built stoves for a Mayan Community. Many people gave me funny looks when I told them our purpose for going. When you think of Mayans, the first thing that comes to mind is the 2012 calendar. Once we got to the village, it was not hard to tell why they needed the stoves. »
