The Vanguard Vision
At this point in our lives, even those of us who are not avid consumers of news should be very familiar with turning on the TV or opening up a newspaper or magazine and seeing devastation. Wars and conflicts worldwide are documented more than they have ever been before, so it comes as no surprise that we can skim a page of photographs displaying the weak, the suffering, the dying and the dead while listening to an iPod and scarfing down lunch. We read tragic news, but most of us are good at putting the darker side of life out of sight and mind. When it comes to Haiti and the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that caused mass devastation Tuesday, we at the Vanguard have found that this particular catastrophic event is especially hard to ignore. »
The thing about poverty and health crises is that they can’t be entirely contained anymore. The world is past the point of large groups of people never coming into contact with other large groups of people. I would be willing to bet a good deal of money that, living in any large city in the world, there is probably at least one person from nearly every other large city in the world. Still, I frequently hear and read arguments that essentially propose this: if problems aren’t happening primarily in the United States, why are Americans spending their time and money helping to solve them? Maybe poverty in Afghanistan didn’t seem important until September 11th, 2001. Even for those folks who believe that a life outside of U.S. borders isn’t as valuable as one inside of it (unless of course that life is accompanied by an American Passport), it must be becoming obvious that globalization is making problems on the other side of the globe much closer to us. »

Dear Editor,
There has never been a single study showing that exposure to the
low levels of smoke found in bars and restaurants with decent modern
ventilation and filtration systems kills or harms anyone. »
Detroit gets a bum rap in the media, and one could argue that it is rightfully warranted due to its woes in recent decades. Statistics (first city to ever lose one million residents, nearly 30 percent unemployment, thousands of empty homes, etc) are often used to back up claims that Detroit is a dying city, and that we should abandon it altogether. As someone who considers himself somewhat of a prodigal son of Detroit (my family moved when I was 3), I take offense that my hometown is being thrown under the wagon. Having visited Chicago in November, I know what the “model” big city looks like, with green parks, bustling sidewalks, and blocks upon blocks of skyscrapers with stores on the bottom floors with hip, modern lofts above. An active nightlife and a smattering of fine dining also complete the scene. »
Many students are preparing themselves for the final leg of the race, flinging themselves towards the finish line after four long years of obstacles and sacrifices. Graduation day is the finish line which we all hope to cross confidently and ably. Though you may think, upon finishing, that you are the only one who feels unprepared or unsettled about your capabilities and your potential, but you are not. Most of our fellow classmates are experiencing these same doubts. What you do to prepare yourself, starting now, is going to make all the difference. »
