Room shortage hampers learning
October 23, 2006 —
I pay over $500 for my three-credit class and it is supposed to cover the cost of the professor and the classroom. Registration for classes takes place months in advance, so any problems with a particular class, its size, or the professor teaching it should become evident before classes start.
I am writing this due to the annoyance I have with the location of my Intro to Theatre class. Currently, my class is being held in the make-up room next to the Black Box Theatre.
The make-up room is about the same size as some classrooms, but instead of desks, there are two counters and one big table. This location is actually a step up from where the class was originally supposed to meet, the Black Box Theatre in Curtiss 180.
When you have a class of over 20 students trying to learn around a big table with too few chairs, it isn't too pleasant. What really gets me is that the course is listed as a "lecture" course and it was scheduled in a place where there isn't even a board or desks to write on.
How am I supposed to take proper notes during a lecture course if I have to balance everything on my lap? Over time, one may be able to master the art of balancing a notebook and textbook on their lap, but that doesn't account for the location. The explanation for it being held in this venue is due to an alleged "classroom shortage" at SVSU.
Is there really a classroom shortage on campus? I'm not convinced there really is. Yes, I realize that a number of classes were displaced due to the renovations in Pioneer Hall, but is the campus really unable to properly accommodate all the classes they offer?
If SVSU can't accommodate all the classes it has, why not get rid of the ones they don't have the room for?
Now some might ask, "Why is she just voicing her opinion about this now, when half the semester has already gone by?" The answer to that question is simple: I was hoping that the University would eventually come to its senses and move the lecture course to a proper location in an actual functional classroom.
Obviously, I was wrong because my class is still being held in the same location. I'm writing this to hopefully prevent future classes from being scheduled in improper venues.
With winter semester registration rapidly approaching, I would like SVSU to consider whether it has enough room to properly accommodate all of the classes that it is offering.
