His House overstepped boundary at Variety Show

October 2, 2006 —
The other night while at the Homecoming Variety Show, we were shocked and caught off-guard by the organization His House, who used the event as platform to go beyond the lines of recruitment and border on proselytizing. While we wholeheartedly believe in everyone's right to freedom of speech and expression, there are certain events and places that should be "off limits." To take a university event and use it for a non-university purpose is completely vulgar. The variety show should be one of school and team spirit, not a place for you to evangelize your organization's message.
We anticipate that many will see this letter condemning Christianity; however, this is not the case. We would be as offended if any organization - religious, Greek, social or academic - took advantage to do recruitment.
To claim that there is only one way to believe or worship is a smack in the face of many students and Christians, some at SVSU. As we are on an ever-embarking quest to diversify the University, comments like these continue to drive people away.
Real diversity comes when we collectively recognize and accept the views, beliefs, and attitudes of others. To act as the voice of all Christians, we would have anticipated a message of all inclusiveness, but sadly we were wrong.
To tell a mixed faith audience that there is only one way to get into Heaven encroaches on each of their respective belief systems. We hope that when an event of this magnitude comes around again that people will remember SVSU Red Pride and not self religious proclamation.
