Program Board sponsors annual Street Fest party

On Friday, the SVSU bookstore parking lot and Collings Drive were blocked off to make room for the fifth annual Street Fest, hosted by Program Board.

The event was planned and designed to give students an opportunity to enjoy themselves and take a moment to relax before the typical daily activities of the semester get too far underway. The night featured various music, activities, games and rides - all of which were free to the students.

This year a Tilt-a-Whirl and Fun Slide were the two amusement rides brought in. The rides were set up in the bookstore parking lot along with a caricature artist and a Dance-Dance Revolution Extreme arcade game.

Collings Drive featured the rest of the event. A stage was set up at the corner of Collings and Fox Drives. Sigma Pi sponsored the music for the fourth year in a row, entitled Pi Stock, by bringing in two bands - Just Sprout and Morgan's Last Call, along with a DJ. They also threw out free prizes from the stage.

The Campus Police had a table as well, set up with free snacks and drinks to get involved in the fun but also to ensure students exercise safety.

Student Association members were grilling hot dogs for free and selling $5 Red Zone T-shirts that allow for a free bus trip to the Grand Valley game later this year.

The H.I.S.O. (Hispanic Interest Student Organization) set up a color roulette game that cost a dime to play with winners receiving various types of candy.

Program Board had a free raffle for students to participate in. Prizes included a stereo, various DVDs, lamps, chairs, etc.

The peak hour of the event (between 8 and 9 p.m.) saw more than 200 students participating in the various activities, which some of last year's participants felt was a better turn out than last year.

Freshmen Megan Edgerton, Katie Hendershot, and Erinn Holm said they had fun at the event and that it really adds to the college experience.

"It's cool they make everyone feel welcome," Edgerton said.

"I can't wait for next year." Hendershot added.
