Program Board organizes campus events
August 25, 2006 —
What to do on campus is a big question for a lot of students who may think there is never anything interesting going on. One on-campus organization functions to help students find things to do around campus.
The SVSU Program Board is a student organization that provides students with both large and small campus events. Money is allocated from tuition so the organization can plan activities throughout the year.
What Program Board wants to do is "get students involved and get them out of their room or house," according to Crystal Dillard, Program Board president. "We want to provide free entertainment, food, and events on campus, and to get people to meet others."
"Lack of participation is a very big problem," Dillard says. "I don't know if people aren't informed or if they aren't interested."
Getting the word out is also a problem, one that Dillard hopes to rectify.
"It's one of those things, you have to think of some creative stuff to do," she says, "whether that means people walking around with crazy outfits on, yelling, or walking around with bulletin boards on them. It has to be more creative."
Program Board also works with Student Association, another student organization. "We're really working this year to have a bigger bond than in years past," she says.
Program Board and Student Association are the two largest University-funded organizations that, working along with some of the smaller organizations, hope to make the campus atmosphere better.
There is no limit to how many students can join Program Board. During the summer, membership falls to around 20 members. However, from fall through spring, there may be as many as 100 members.
Open recruitment for Program Board is a two-week period that happens four times a year - students can fill out applications at the beginning of the fall, winter, spring, and summer semesters.
Program Board has different opportunities within the organization that offer "real world experience that gets you out of the classroom," Dillard explains. "Whether you're a business, art, or marketing major, this gives you a whole new perspective on a job."
Those interested can get an application at the Student Life Center or the Program Board Web site. Applicants must be taking a minimum of six credits and have at least a 2.0 GPA. Program Board will inform applicants if they have been accepted, and once the applicant attends a meeting, they become an official member with voting rights and access to the Blackboard site.
Program Board meets weekly on a specified date. Dates for meetings have yet to be finalized. Meetings are open; anyone is welcome to voice suggestions, comments, concerns and questions.
Anyone interested in Program Board or with ideas or suggestions can contact Dillard at cmdillar@svsu.edu or stop by the Program Board office located in Curtiss Hall 123.
