URA brings campus residents together

The University Residence Association (URA) is not only a student-run organization to preside over all SVSU residents, but it is also a group with a mission to unify all residents by encouraging campus-wide leadership opportunities and growth through social and cultural diversity.

"Student voice is vital," says Merry Jo Brandimore, director of Residential Life. "I think the energy and the tolerance and the passion are all things we would miss out on if we didn't have these student organizations like URA, Student Life, and Program Board."

URA President Nick Tereck got involved with the organization his freshman year. As a now fourth-year sociology major planning to go into higher education and student affairs, Tereck stresses the importance of URA's ability to promote leadership skills, life-long friendships, and discipline.

"I really just want to let students know that they should get involved," Tereck says. "Whether it's with us or SA or whatever, just get involved because it makes the difference. It's up to you to make your stay here enjoyable."

URA is structured to resemble local government. It is comprised of campus residents, and the General Assembly is open to all students living on campus. In fact, every campus resident is automatically a member, as $10 of their housing costs goes toward the organization. Voting status is attained after General Assembly members attend three consecutive meetings.

The president and four elected URA representatives from the four dormitory community councils - The First Year Community Council, South East Community Council, University Village Council, and Pine Grove Council - manage all representation.

The governing Executive Board consists of Tereck, Executive Vice President Julie Phenis, Vice President of Records Tiffany Glinski, Vice President of Programming Jessica Chandler, Michigan Organization Communications Coordinator Shane Williamson, and National Communications Coordinator Reggie Blocket. Additionally, Associate Director of Residential Life Greg Behe serves as staff advisor.

New issues and ideas relating to housing and campus activities are discussed at the General Assembly meetings. These meetings often serve as forums for initial URA event planning.

Among other events, URA is responsible for co-sponsoring "Fresh Start," by featuring Casino Night tonight and a hypnotist and comedian tomorrow. In mid-to-late September, URA will put on a workshop-type event to promote leadership skills.

"I feel strongly that we need to support the efforts of the students in order to keep them involved and their decisions viable," Brandimore says.

"And, I just think we have been rewarded over and over," she adds. "What the students have done through this organization has been noteworthy and has captured awards ever since the beginning. Their red pride, if you will, is almost infectious."
