Saginaw offers pleasing combination of bars, movies, penguins
August 25, 2006 —
The start of another school year means classes, homework, and occasionally some pesky exams. But it also means that Saginaw will come alive again as students move back on campus and fill the hallways of SVSU.
And the question that will soon fill the heads of these students is: So... what is there to do in this town?
As most college students who have been around since the year 2000 (or is that just me?) know, Old Town Saginaw is one giant bar. But for the incoming freshmen and the rest of the underage kids without fake IDs, some other source of entertainment is necessary.
Luckily, Saginaw is not your average city. That's right - Saginaw has not one, but two movie theaters.
And to maximize confusion, neither of the theaters plays the same movies as the other. So if you're looking for John Tucker Must Die, by God don't go to the Saginaw 8 because it's only playing at the Fashion Square Cinemas, located conveniently next to the mall after which it is probably named.
Come to think of it, Saginaw even has an additional half a movie theater in the form of the Quad. The Quad is connected to the Saginaw 8 (just down Bay Rd. a few miles from SVSU) and plays only those movies that are either already on DVD or did so poorly in the real theater that even the $2.50 admission fee seems ludicrous. But at least the tickets cost less than the popcorn! Could it get any better?
But enough about movies. Everybody knows that college students love mini golf. That's why Saginaw has Kokomo's, located on Tittabawassee Rd. just off Bay Rd. Not only does Kokomo's offer 18 holes of date-tastic golf of the miniature variety, but this family fun center also has a go-kart track for those who like to drive in circles and laser tag for those who like to shoot people - in a non-violent kind of way, of course.
Those who wish to travel a little further downtown will discover that Saginaw even has a zoo. The name is a bit misleading, though. Even though it is a "Children's Zoo," it is still a fun place for people of all ages. Plus they have penguins that are about the cutest things in the whole county. And admission is only five dollars. Who wouldn't pay five dollars for penguins?
Finally, even though it is a bit of a drive from SVSU, Shooters of Saginaw hosts a variety of concerts in its music hall, comedy shows in its comedy club, and local radio station DJs spinning "the hottest hits in Michigan" in... the other part of Shooters.
Conveniently enough, Shooters is hosting a College Ice Breaker on Sept. 7 for students 18 years and older.
Check out the Web site www.6shooters.com for other events, including a rockin' Fear Factory concert in the near future.
These are only a few of the fun things to do in Saginaw. There are probably at least three more. So go on, forget about the pains of sitting in class for three hours and go shoot some eight year olds in laser tag.
And if you go see Jimmie's Chicken Shack at Shooters on Sept. 9, be sure to get me a tee shirt - I used to love those guys when I was in high school.
