The SVSU Board of Control approved the third phase of renovations to the athletics facilities and approved several energy conservation projects during its regular session Monday.

The Board approved up to $850,000 for the final of three planned renovation phases to the athletics facilities which would include new home and visiting dugouts as well as permanent bleacher seating for the softball and baseball fields.

Phase I of the renovations was the now completed addition of seating to Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium and renovating Cardinal Gym, while Phase II included the construction of the new concession and restroom facility near the stadium that is set to open early this fall.

The Board also approved a resolution to go forward with several energy conservation projects aimed at lowering energy costs.

The approved project will have a budget of $425,000 and include various lighting and faucet controls as well as an automated ventilation system to regulate ventilation in such places as the Ryder Center, the Malcolm Field Theatre for Performing Arts, and the Rhea E. Miller Recital Hall. It is estimated that the renovations will save the University just over $132,000 annually.

In addition, the Board also approved a permit application to the Michigan Department of Transportation that would allow for the University to take control of the landscaping on the Bay Road boulevard that begins just north of Pierce and runs adjacent to campus.

According to Vice President of Administration and Business Affairs Jim Muladore, the University has fielded complaints about the condition of the boulevard, particularly with the overgrowth of grass. The permit would allow the University to tend to the entire 100,000 square feet of the currently state-controlled boulevard.

Muladore also provided an update on various projects throughout campus and revisited others that have been completed in the last year. Muladore said the Pioneer Hall addition and renovation project is currently on schedule and briefly discussed the campus' Landscape master plan. Muladore also said construction will begin soon on a new computerized sign that will replace the old one at the corner of Bay and Pierce roads. According to Muladore, the sign should be operational sometime this fall.
