Golf coach resigns
Search for new coach begins as Bethune retains his position in Alumni Relations
June 26, 2006 —
Men's golf coach Andy Bethune announced his resignation from that position after four years with the program, effective on Friday.
Bethune took the squad to the NCAA National Championships this year, where the team finished 15th.
He also was named GLIAC Coach of the Year after the Cardinals won their 11th conference championship last fall.
Despite these recent successes, Bethune felt it was time to step away.
"I have enjoyed my four years as coach and am proud of what we have been able to accomplish as a team," Bethune said in a release. "With my full-time responsibilities at SVSU and having a young family at home, I simply do not have the required time and energy to commit to the team. I will continue to support the SVSU golf program and help with the transition when a new coach is selected. I wish the team well and will miss the kids. They are very special to me."
Former Athletic Director Joe Vogl praised the work Bethune has done with the team the last few years.
"Andy did a tremendous job for us over the past four years," Vogl said in the release. "In that short time, he excelled at running the program effectively and assembled a very talented group of young men which produced national recognition and another conference championship."
Bethune will remain at the University and continue his work as the Associate Executive Director for Development and Alumni Relations. The search for a new coach has begun.
