CardMail upgrade on its way

A new system upgrade scheduled for mid-July could alleviate reoccurring problems with CardMail.

Information Technology Services is currently in the process of testing an upgrade that will feature a faster server, more stable operating system, better managed database, and 10 times more space for each student, according to Ken Schindler, executive director of ITS.

The updates have grown increasingly necessary in light of a recent rise in CardMail usage throughout campus. Such increased usage can be attributed to students and faculty making CardMail their primary e-mail and users staying signed on for long periods of time or not cleaning out their inboxes. SPAM has also played a part in the usage increase.

If system testing goes as planned, ITS tentatively plans to install the new upgrades during the evening of July 17.

Schindler adds that a new rule is set to go into effect with the upgrades. Any e-mail not opened within 90 days of being received will automatically be deleted. Schindler says the rule should help in cleaning up SPAM that has been moved to a "catch-all" folder but not deleted.

Schindler also says students will not notice any differences in how e-mail is sent or received if the possible upgrades go into effect.

An announcement will be made on the Student News and Events Web site when the scheduled upgrades are completed. For additional information, contact ITS during its new spring and summer hours located on the Web site.
