Greeks sponsor afternoon 'Fling' in Courtyard

Stress-relieving activities were set up in the Presidential Courtyard Tuesday for the first "Greek Fling," hosted by the Greeks of SVSU.

In the past, Student Life and the Student Association had hosted the event, previously called "Spring Fling," but after it did not happen last year, the Greeks decided to take over the event.

From 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., students played a variety of inflatable games that were set up in the Courtyard. Human foosball, a bungee run, and the mechanical bull were big hits. Students also ran around inside an inflatable maze and played laser tag.

"I just got done riding the mechanical bull. This afternoon's been a lot of fun and a good de-stressor for finals," said sophomore Desiree Slaterline-Bassi.

The Greek organizations on campus also provided quite a few carnival games. Alpha Sigma Alpha hosted the ring toss, Kappa Tau Epsilon set up "Pluck-a-Duck," Sigma Pi had "Finish Line," and Tau Kappa Epsilon set up balloon darts.

Each organization also set up tables along the side of the Courtyard. Students could go table to table talking with current members of each fraternity or sorority. The organizations provided information for people to learn more about what they do and to possibly recruit some new members.

Other students enjoyed the food provided for them. There was free pizza and several students continued to make cotton candy and popcorn all afternoon. The University Police Department donated root beer to drink.

Other entertainment included three live bands, "Heirs," "Morgan's Last Call," and "I Eat Glue," that periodically played throughout the afternoon. Between sets, DJ Snakes spun music in the Courtyard.

The Greek Fling seemed to be greatly appreciated by the students.

"It gives us a break from studying and helps us relieve stress," freshman Kenny Sheidler explained. "We have tried everything and really liked the free food."

Some people took the opportunity to socialize with friends. Many gathered around the Courtyard talking with friends, playing football and even pulled their textbooks back out and studied as everyone enjoyed the sun and nice weather.

Sophomore Tiffany Giattino commented on the friendliness of the afternoon, saying, "It's nice to see so many of the Greek organizations get together to make this happen."
