Forums to discuss fundamental religious questions
April 17, 2006 —
Does God exist? Are leaders born or made? Does the theory of evolution explain our existence?
The Ecumenical Campus Ministry, a Christian organization on campus, will be holding forums today and next Monday to explore these questions in the Multi-purpose room at 6:30 p.m.
The forums, titled "?Que Pasa?" or "what is happening?" will feature two experts from Midland and is free of charge.
The half-English, half-Spanish fliers were distributed around campus by the ECM, an idea that was proposed by Dr. Luis Gonzalez, campus minister and moderator at the two forums.
"The fliers were in English and Spanish because I want to get the attention of all students, including the 267 Hispanic students that attend SVSU," said Gonzalez, a professional translator. "I want to make these events available to everyone."
Today the ECM welcomes guest lecturer Brian Molitor, CEO of Molitor International and author of the book Boy's Passage, Man's Journey, to speak on the foundations of affective leadership.
"I want the students to understand that there are fundamental truths to becoming an effective leader," says Molitor, a working consultant on leadership for 25 years. "Anyone that applies these truths can become an effective leader."
The second guest lecturer, Dr. Bruce Malone, a research leader at Dow Chemical and author of Searching for the Truth: Changing the World with the Evidence for Creation, will speak next Monday on the controversial issues of evolution versus intelligent design.
Malone, a supporter of intelligent design, is knowledgeable in the fields of biology, geology, anthropology and physics.
"I hope to give students a more informed decision about where we came from," he says.
According to Gonzalez, both men have agreed to speak at the forum for free. Copies of their books will be available for purchase before and after the lectures.
Is there a right answer to these questions?" Gonzalez asks. "Come and form an opinion for yourself. The ECM welcomes everyone."
