Digital mural nearing completion

SVSU and Saginaw High School have joined forces to create a mural that celebrates the transitions from high school to college. The mural will be on display in the Writing Center and in the cafeteria at Saginaw High.

The mural, titled Finding the Center, is what is known as a digital mural, meaning that it was put together using computer imaging. It measures six by twenty feet and will be printed on vinyl.

The mural is composed of artwork from SVSU students Erica Kowal, Howard McLean, Ben Robinson, and Cole Swinehart. The project was the core curriculum of their class taught by professor Mike Mosher. When asked why they took the class, they all said they were looking forward to a unique opportunity.

"I thought it would be great for my portfolio," Kowal said. "Also, it sounded like fun. I've never done anything this size or in this manner before."

Artwork from Saginaw High students also appears in the mural, not to mention the students themselves. Caricatures of many Saginaw High students were made during a workshop on Feb. 25. The workshop was intended to get all the participants together in hopes of generating some material for the mural.

Though the mural in its vinyl form has not been made yet, the students have seen a small printout of the final draft. When asked how they felt about the final product, they were all very positive.

"I feel great about the mural," Robinson said. "It brings together all of our hard work, ideas, and perceptions."

"The images are sewn together nicely," said Mosher, who is happy that so many people participated. "It's tons of artwork crowding together. All participants will be able to see themselves represented."

It has been a rewarding experience for all involved as well. Each member of the project team was thrilled at how well everything went.

"The whole thing has been great," Swinehart said. "Knowing that I got people involved with something like this and that I helped people express themselves, that's a great feeling."

The mural will be installed in the near future, but there is no set date. There are also plans being made for a dedication ceremony, though there is no set date for that, either.

Mosher and his mural class are now working on a new project which will feature SVSU students with disabilities.
