Dining Services announces Carnival Night, no plans for summer construction
April 10, 2006 —
It appears as though Dining Services will be enjoying a welcome relief next fall, as Dining Services' management stated at the Food Forum on Tuesday that all the new construction and additions that have existed in the conceptual state for some time now are completed, corporal realities.
After enduring a couple of years that can be described as nothing less that frenetic, the majority of SVSU's dining staff will have a chance to settle into their roles. No new construction is planned.
The Freshens ice cream, smoothie and pretzel shop - located in the C-Store where Java City used to be - is doing fairly well, according to Matt Wilton, SVSU's Director of Dining Services. When asked how sales were, he responded, "They're not bad - they're encouraging. It's doing good, but it's too early to tell."
However, it appears as though the C-Store has seen a corresponding drop in sales, although this is most obviously due to the fact that the new store that has been opened competes for the student body's dollars. Yet sales of some newer items, like the curious Fiji water, have been brisk in spite of this.
The RFoC's most recent theme night was by all accounts a success, according to Executive Chef Nick Kole. He said that virtually all comments that he has heard have been quite positive. Dining Services has one more theme night planned for this semester, Carnival Night, which will take place Tuesday. The event will feature foods one would commonly find at a fair, such as coney dogs, elephant ears, nachos, etc.
Some students may remember the panini grill that used to be in the Java City in Science East. Those who were fond of it may be interested to know that the grill is coming back for the fall semester - however, it will be relocated to the RFoC, where the sandwich and salad bar is currently located.
This move is likely due to the fact that the Grille Works in Einstein's Food Court offers essentially the same items that the panini grill would offer if it were placed back in the Science East Java City.
Finally, the Dining Services Management mentioned that additional and replacement student employees will be required to staff the University's dining establishments. Students wishing to apply should drop off an application at the Dining Services office in Curtiss 122.
In addition, any year-end comments on the University's dining facilities are welcomed. Students can contact Dining Services via its Web site at svsu.campusdish.com.
