New staff hired for 2006-07 Vanguard

The Professional Journalistic Practices Committee (PJPC) has hired Jason Wolverton as The Valley Vanguard's editor-in-chief and Jason Masten for the Vanguard's advertising and business manager positions for the 2006-07 school year.

Wolverton, 23, is currently serving his third semester as news editor, joined the Vanguard in the Fall 2004 semester.

The Burt native will take over as editor following the summer issue, scheduled to be published at the end of June.

"Jason was instrumental in allowing the Vanguard to transition from a bi-weekly publication to a weekly one," says outgoing editor-in-chief Andy Hoag. "The work he has put forth the last two years has truly been a gift."

Wolverton says he will continue the Vanguard's weekly schedule.

"The Vanguard has really flourished the last two years under Andy," Wolverton says. "I hope to maintain that same success."

The 20-year-old Masten has served as the Vanguard's advertising manager since October of last year. He became the first student to be hired for both the advertising and business manager positions when he was hired on Friday, March 31.

"Jason's commitment to the Vanguard since the day he was hired has been impressive," Hoag says.

The PJPC is the governing body for the Vanguard and Cardinal Sins and is charged with, among other tasks, of hiring staff positions for the two publications.

The committee meets monthly and is comprised of chairperson and University Ombudsman Richard Thompson, Director of Media Relations J.J. Boehm, the Vanguard's faculty advisor, editor-in-chief, business manager, and advertising manager, Sins' faculty advisor and editor-in-chief, and a representative from the Student Association and University Residence Association.
