Surrealism exhibit on display in gallery
February 20, 2006 —
Surrealism is a tricky thing to pull off, unless you are acclaimed artist Sally T. Ryan, or "SAINTRYAN" as she is known in the art world. The Ann Arbor artist is featured in SVSU's gallery until Saturday, March 4.
The show is titled "Muse's Tantrum," which is the name of one of the prominent pieces on display. The gallery is showcasing over 30 works by the renowned artist.
Her work is fascinating, to say the least. It is full of classical, mythical, and futuristic images all masterfully blended together.
Ryan uses color generously in her pencil and paint pieces, which is a stark contrast to the number of black ink prints on display.
Ryan has been in the business of art for over 20 years and has had her work displayed all over North America and in Europe. She currently teaches in Ann Arbor.
The most striking pieces in the collection are "Pet with Progeny" and "Church Fairy Viewing Heathen Nucleus." "Progeny" is set on a huge canvas and features a monstrous robot amidst a kingdom of ants, holding a beautiful scarlet jewel with a miniature woman on top. "Church Fairy" is also a large piece and, while simple, it is still powerful.
Paint aside, the ink prints are the dominate part of the display as they take up most of the gallery space. Their topics range from Shakespeare to scorpions and each presents its own visual puzzle.
The gallery's hours are noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday through Thursday and noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The gallery is located in the Arbury Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.
