Students to babysit to fund trip
February 13, 2006 —
This Valentine's Day, Alternative Break students at SVSU are spending their evening a little different than most others have planned. There will be no candlelight dinners or romantic evenings for them; as part of a fundraiser for their Alternative Spring Break trip, these students are babysitting.
For $10 a child, parents can drop their kids (ages five and up) off in Student Life to be babysat. From 5 until 8 p.m., the Alternative Spring Break crew has an evening of activities planned for the children. The activities will include board games, finger painting, karaoke, cookie decorating, and anything else that would be appropriate for the age of the children that attend.
The usual games in Student Life, such as ping pong, pool, and arcade games, will also be available for the childrens use.
"It's a very exciting and different fund-raiser for us, says Nick Tereck, the Alternative Break site leader. "We would like to give the faculty and anyone else around SVSU the chance to get away for a few hours, which also gives us the opportunity to work with children. Especially since that is what we'll be doing on our trip."
This fund-raiser will help them make their way to Greenville, South Carolina during Spring Break. At Crossroads Group Home, the students will be working closely with young girls that have been sexually abused.
"We will do anything that the facility needs us to do with these girls," Tereck says. "Since most of us are nursing or education majors, we are taking the opportunity to get the experience we need and to just be their friends."
Babysitting is not the only fund-raiser this group has planned. The crew is also hosting a night at Culver's, on Bay Road. The crew members will serve food and bus tables on Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. In return for their work, Culver's will be donating 10 percent of its profits during the two hours that the crew is working.
Additionally, the students traveling to Guyana for their Alternative Break will be hosting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the Cardinal Gym on Friday, Feb. 24 beginning at 10 a.m. Registration costs $10.
