Men, women both win meets
Teams combine for 11 firsts at home in Division II Team Challenge

Both the men's and women's SVSU track teams won the Division II Team Challenge held Friday and Saturday in the Ryder Center.
The men, behind 11 top-three finishes and five first-place finishes, won the event with 118.5 points, 13 more than second place Lewis University. Meanwhile, the women's team, which had nine top threes and six first places, finished with 111 points, seven and a half ahead of Hillsdale.
Senior Mario Guerrero took two second places in the high jump and long jump, while teammate sophomore Eltaro Hooper took first in the triple jump and finished behind Guerrero in the high jump.
Other first place athletes for the men were junior Greg Schmit, who won the 5000-meter run in 15 minutes, 18.69 seconds; the 'A' distance medley team, consisting of senior Paul Jozwiak, sophomore Justin Thomason, sophomore Nick Krus, and senior Adam Roach, who set an arena record by running the event in 10:14.16; freshman Sean Egan, who set a provisional NCAA mark in the shot put at 53 feet, 10 inches; and sophomore Cullen Jamison, who also set a provisional mark in the weight throw at 55'6".
Additionally, Roach finished third in mile run, junior Brandon Johnson took second in the 3000-meter, and the 'A' 4x400-meter relay team - Thomason, freshman Charlie Richards, sophomore Kyle Dengler, and Guerrero - finished second in its event.
The women, meanwhile, were led by junior Ashley Bishop and senior Mary Jo Pouillon, who combined for 36 of the team's 118.5 points. Bishop won both the shot put and weight throw, setting provisional marks in both, while Pouillon finished second in both events.
Senior Mandie Gallier took first in the 400-meter dash in 58.63 seconds, while sophomore Becca Rudey won the 5000-meter in 18:07.07. Sophomore Leighann Dowell finished the 60-meter hurdles in 9.18 seconds for the win, and the 'A' 4x400 team (sophomore Brittany Gendron, freshman Ashley Morrow, and seniors Lisa Fair and Gallier) took first with a time of 4:00.08. Morrow also took third in the 200-meter dash, running it in 26.34 seconds.
The Cardinals head to Findlay on Friday for the University of Findlay Open at 2:30 p.m.
