Lakers hold off Lady Cards
February 6, 2006 —
The SVSU women's basketball team could not capitalize on a 9-0 run midway through the second half and lost to No. 22 Lake Superior State 78-73 on Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie.
Down 12 with 11:31 to play, the Lady Cardinals made their run to come within three at 65-62 with 9:18 left. The Lakers withstood the run and held off SVSU down the stretch.
SVSU trailed virtually the entire game, holding the lead for the first minute and 11 seconds of the game. The Lakers led the Lady Cardinals by 13 at three different times in the first half and once more in the second before SVSU made its run.
Four women scored in double figures for the Lady Cardinals including sophomore Kara Kinzer, who led the team with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting, including 5-of-12 from three-point range. Sophomore Kali Briggs added 14 points and 14 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double and eighth of the year, while sophomore Jenna Schroeder had 13 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Freshman Tricia Everett added 12 points and five assists.
The Lady Cardinals did not help their cause by shooting 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) from the free throw line. The Lakers, meanwhile, did not shoot a great percentage from the line, just 61.8 percent, but had 19 more attempts than SVSU for a 17-point advantage.
SVSU had six of its seven players who saw significant minutes commit three or more fouls, including Everett, who fouled out late in the game. Junior Mickey Grayer was mired in foul trouble the entire game, and had just four points and zero rebounds in 12 minutes of play.
Lakers junior guard Monica Rehmann made six three pointers en route to 27 points. Rehmann was helped by junior forward Mandi Johnson scored 13 points and pulled down 17 rebounds.
The Lakers held a 53-39 rebounds advantage, including 23 offensive boards to SVSU's 24 defensive rebounds. The disparity allowed LSSU, which shot just 38.5 percent for the game, to score 16 second-chance points.
SVSU was playing its fourth road game in a row, two days after playing at Ferris State and losing there, 76-73. The Lady Cardinals found themselves down 14 at halftime in that game, 46-32, before making a 20-4 run to take the lead with under 10 minutes to play.
Kinzer had 19 points to again lead the Cardinals, who had 28 assists on 31 field goals. Schroeder and Briggs both had double-doubles, with Schroeder scoring 13 points and dropping 11 assists and Briggs scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 boards.
The two losses leave SVSU at 4-9 in the GLIAC and 7-15 overall, while the Lakers improved to 9-5 in the conference and 17-5 overall.
The Lady Cardinals will spend the next two weeks at home before two road games to finish out the regular season. Rival Northwood comes in on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
