Track teams host final home meet of month, earn six firsts
Bishop leads women; men earn 12 top-three finishes

The SVSU track teams took six first places in the SVSU Collegiate Open on Friday night. Hosting the event, SVSU got two first places from the women's team and four from the men.
Freshman Sam Tilmon took first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.58 seconds, six-tenths of a second better than teammate junior Max Masters.
The SVSU 'A' team, consisting of senior Matt Collins, sophomores Kyle Dengler and Pete O'Brien, and senior Mario Guerrero, took first in the 4x400-meter relay, running the event in 3:28.27.
Freshman Kyle McDaniel cleared 14 feet to win the pole vault competition, and freshman Sean Egan won the shot put at 53 feet, 5 inches, more than 7 feet longer than the second-place winner.
Junior Ashley Bishop continued her strong performance in the shot put, taking first with a toss of 42 feet, 4.5 inches.
In addition, the women's 'A' team - sophomore Brittany Gendron, freshman Ashley Morrow, and seniors Lisa Fair and Mandie Gallier - took first in the 4x400, finishing in 4:03.83.
The women had eight athletes finish in the top three, including Bishop, who took second in the weight throw.
Morrow and Gendron took second and third, respectively, in the 200-meter dash, while junior Jessica Sweeney and freshman Nicole Schmidt finished second and third in the 800-meter. Sophomore Leighann Dowell missed out on first in the 60-meter hurdles by one-tenth of a second and finished second.
SVSU got 12 top-three finishes from the men.
Sophomore Mario Cornejo took third in the 3000-meter run, while the SVSU 'A' team - senior Jerome Recker, freshman Charlie Richards, and seniors Paul Jozwiak and Adam Roach - finished second in the distance medley.
Guerrero cleared 6 feet, 8 inches for third in the high jump, and freshman Jake Morris took third in the pole vault, six inches behind teammate McDaniel.
Scott Martin and freshman Dan Benjamin finished second and third in the triple jump, and sophomore Cullen Jamison took third in the weight throw.
Senior Chris Barenek, redshirting this year, took first in the 400-meter dash.
Baranek was competing for the Saginaw Track Club, an option available in "open" meets to those who are redshirting.
The Cardinals will head to Findlay for the Alltel Classic next weekend. Events will start at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Following that event, SVSU will host the NCAA Division II Team Challenge on Feb. 3 and 4.
