Relay planning begins

As the winter semester starts, some familiar signs have been filling the hallways advertising the American Cancer Society's annual all-night event, Relay For Life.

The largest fundraiser sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS), Relay For Life enlists the help of teams of students and community members to find sponsors that donate money for them to walk or run part of the relay. The ACS contributes the majority of money that promotes cancer research and funds the search for a cure.

The Relay is a 12-hour event that will take place at SVSU on Friday, April 7 starting at 7 pm.

Last year the SVSU Relay had 35 teams and raised over $31,000 for the ACS. This year the fundraising goal is $35,000, and the Relay For Life committee, headed by students Justin Findlay and Jessica Gibson, would like to add 15 new teams to the group from last year.

The Relay For Life event is also more than just walking the track; participants have a wide variety of fun activities and entrainment throughout the night. Last year the committee provided karaoke, live bands, DJs, and free food from restaurants in the area.

Another important part of the event is the survivor time and luminary ceremony that happens at midnight. The two ceremonies go hand in hand, remembering those who lost the battle with cancer, and those who have survived.

The SVSU Relay for Life Kickoff will be Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 7 and 8. Interested students can stop by locations outside the RFoC, the Zahnow Library and in the Regional Education Building.
