Down 10 with three minutes to go, the SVSU men's basketball team fought back before losing at Mercyhurst 67-63 on Saturday.

The loss came two days after the Cardinals won their first GLIAC game of the year, a 69-65 victory at Gannon.

SVSU never led in the second half, as it found itself down by eight just two minutes into the half. The Cardinals were down three at halftime, but were unable to outscore the Lakers in the second stanza.

The Cardinals shot well in both halves, finishing 22-of-47 (46.8 percent) from the field, including 8-of-19 (42.1) from the three-point arc. Mercyhurst just shot better, shooting 26-of-46 (56.5) for the game.

After committing just nine turnovers in the win over Gannon, SVSU turned it over 20 times against Mercyhurst, including 11 times in the second half.

SVSU had just three players score in double figures, none of which put in more than 12 points. Junior guard Andrae Betts and freshman guard Alex Daniel both scored 12. Daniel was perfect from the floor, shooting 4-of-4, and from the free throw line, where he made 3-of-3. Sophomore Chris Johnston contributed 10 points.

The Lakers got 20 points off the bench from senior center Jeff Daisley, who shot 10-of-15 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds to lead all players.

Junior guard Avi Fogel was the only other Lakers player in double figures, shooting 6-of-11, including 2-of-2 from behind the arc, for 17 points. Fogel added five assists and five rebounds.

Mercyhurst kept the Cardinals close by shooting just 10-of-22 from the free throw line, while SVSU shot 11-of-14 from the line.

The Cardinals were able to win the close one two days prior in the victory over Gannon. The win was also SVSU's first on the road all season.

Four players scored in double figures, led by Betts, who put in 16 on 5-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-9 from the three-point line. Junior Sydney McDaniel led a trio of players that scored 11 points, along with freshmen Luke Laser and Adam Mughmaw.

SVSU used a strong second half, in which it shot 55 percent from the field, to keep Gannon down. The Cardinals had four players, all freshmen, foul out.

The two games, which left SVSU at 1-6 in the GLIAC and 6-10 overall, were a tune-up for the Cardinals, who face incoming University of Findlay, ranked 11th in the nation at 14-2 (7-1 GLIAC). The Cardinals host the Oilers tomorrow night at 8 p.m.

During halftime of the game, the SVSU Program Board will be giving out tickets to the Sunday, Jan. 22 Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets NBA game.
