Cardinal Internet radio station forming

The logo for the recently created Cardinal Broadcasting Association features a beefed-up cardinal with a headset and microphone standing on a pedestal that says "on air." Although it is not quite on the air yet, the CBA is working towards getting there.

"We hope to get the station up this year," says President Chuck Moser, who anxiously admits that the timetable for being on the air is not set in stone.

"We'll be broadcasting over the Internet instead of the radio waves," Moser says. "We want to be the best in music, news, weather, and sports."

Moser proposed the idea of establishing a radio station to other students last winter, and over the summer he began assembling a team of students to help him fulfill his dream. Students chose an Executive Board to control the organization.

"It's pretty much all commitment-based," says Vice President Kyle McCarty regarding the selection of the Executive Board, which includes Moser, McCarty, Secretary Kati Novak, Treasurer Steve Orlowsky, Executive Assistant to the Treasurer Steve Jones, and Web master Matt Dupuis.

"Basically seven or eight people attend the meetings, but the people who show up put forth a lot of effort," says Novak, who initially designed the logo before The Knitting Mill made an electronic version of it for the CBA's t-shirts.

"Everyone sat down at a meeting and decided what they wanted," McCarty says. "The logo is a product of the great teamwork exemplified by the CBA."

The CBA believes the t-shirts will help the student body become familiar with its organization, but purchasing the shirts was no easy task.

"We had no budget so we each donated $10," McCarty says. "It's an investment by the Executive Board for the future."

The CBA made $38 from t-shirt sales. It is also advertising its organization in other ways. They have a group on Facebook and a course on Blackboard.

"Now that we have a budget, we'll do more publicity," Novak says.

Membership is expected to climb the next two semesters due to advancements in fundraising and advertising. The organization plans to sponsor a Battle of the Bands activity in March as well.

"It's very cool to think what this is going to look like," Moser says. "People are going to be coming out of the woodwork."

As expected, the CBA will need a lot of help to reach its goal of having a radio station at SVSU. Two computers were already donated and they hope to add more equipment soon. The CBA's advisors are Brian Gano, assistant director of University Housing Operations, and Nic Taylor, assistant director for Admissions.

"I know Brian and Nic personally," Moser says. "Brian was here first, and Nic came on board because he was generally interested."

Finding enough qualified individuals may be a difficult task for the members of CBA.

"I was trained at Specs-Howard School of Broadcast Arts Inc. in Southfield, Michigan," says Moser, who believes his previous experience and training should help the CBA reach its long-term goal of maintaining radio programming.

"I will train the Executive Board and then we will train others."

The CBA is open-minded. While it may only be possible to broadcast across campus, it would prefer to broadcast to outside communities, too.

"The administration is positive," Moser says. "We could go 24 hours, seven days per week depending on participation."

The CBA meets Wednesdays at 10 p.m. in the Unity Room. For more information, visit
