The SVSU Board of Control approved an increase in student housing rental rates for the 2006-2007 school year during its regular session Friday, Dec. 16. On average, rates will increase by 4.3 percent.

Freshmen living in the First Year Suites and placed in Living Center North will pay $6,380 next year, an increase of 3.74 percent from this year. The total includes the cost of the room and the 19-meal-per-week meal plan.

Meal plans are mandatory for freshmen living on campus. Freshmen can also choose a plan with 13 meals per week and pay $6,070, a 6.49 percent increase.

The largest increase is for students living in two-bedroom, two-student apartments in Pine Grove and four-bedroom, two-bathroom townhouses in the west side of University Village. Students will pay $4,750 to live there next year, a 10.47 percent increase that does not include a meal plan.

Other increases depend on the amount of students living in a room. Double and triple efficiencies in the Living Centers will cost $3,640, a 4 percent increase. Students living in the two-bedroom apartment-style places in the Living Centers will pay $5,430, a 3.43 percent increase.

The rates were included in the Fiscal Year 2007 Auxiliary Operations business plan approved by the Board.

The Auxiliary Budget is self-supporting, as its revenue comes from housing, food services, and other operating income. The budget is completely separate from that of student tuition and fees.

The Board also approved a resolution to move forward with two capital projects designed to improve the University. The resolution authorized the University to spend $300,000 to construct a biology lab in Brown Hall and $950,000 on Phase II of renovations of athletic facilities.

Phase I, adding seats to Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium and renovating Cardinal Gym, was approved by the Board a year earlier.

Salaries for the 2006 calendar year for administrative staff were set at the meeting as well. President Eric R. Gilbertson will be compensated $192,000, while retiring vice president of academic affairs Robert S.P. Yien will receive $160,300. James G. Muladore, vice president for administration and business affairs, will make $146,300, Robert L. Maurovich, vice president for student services and enrollment management, will receive $142,000, and Lucille M. Beuthin, vice president for public affairs and executive director of development and the SVSU Foundation, will be compensated $126,000.

The Performing Arts Theatre was also renamed at the meeting. Due to his contributions to the University, the Board approved changing the Theatre's name to "The Malcolm Field Theatre for Performing Arts."

An increase of student orientation program fees was also approved for the 2006 school year. Incoming freshmen will be charged $55, while transfer students will be charged $20. The price for the self-support program had not changed since 1998.

Finally, the Board approved faculty tenure and sabbaticals; approved the extension of an existing electric sales agreement with Wolverine Power Marketing Cooperative; approved a contract with Hartford Life and Accident Insurance Company for group life and long-term disability insurance for University employees; and passed a resolution to grant undergraduate and graduate degrees.
