Standout soprano to sing at SVSU

Performance part of Concert Series

Critically acclaimed soprano Glenda Kirkland will perform at Saginaw Valley State University Saturday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 pm in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall as part of the 2004-05 Rhea Miller Concert Series. The concert will feature operatic compositions and spirituals.

Kirkland has performed operas, oratorios and spirituals throughout the U.S. with artists such as Luciano Pavarotti, Barbara Hendricks, Leona Mitchell, James McCracken, Gwyneth Jones, William Warfield and George Shirley.

She has drawn critical praise for her charismatic stage presence and smooth, pure and flexible vocal skills.

Kirkland has performed in several concerts with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, including its Classical Roots programs and its Schubert and Brahms festivals. She also performed on tour with the Orchestra in the Strauss opera, The Egyptian Helen, at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center.

Kirkland's opera performances include the Michigan Opera Theatre production of Aida, Carmen and The Pearl Fishers by Bizet, and Gershwin's Porgy and Bess.

Educated at the Julliard School, Kirkland is currently a professor of voice at Eastern Michigan University.

Garik Pedersen will perform piano accompaniment for the concert. As a soloist, he has performed with the Blue Lake Festival Orchestra, the Plymouth Symphony, and university orchestras throughout the Midwest.

Pedersen received his doctorate from the University of Iowa and is a professor of music at Eastern Michigan University. He is also a summer faculty member of the Interlochen Arts Camp.

The Rhea Miller Concert Series is made possible by a gift from Rhea E. Miller, a long-time friend of SVSU. Her gift, administered by the Miller Trust for Music Education, provides the University with the opportunity to offer outstanding performances by nationally and internationally acclaimed musical artists at no cost to the audience.

There is no admission charge and tickets are not required for the concert, but seating is limited. For further information, contact the SVSU Box Office at 964-4261 or the SVSU Department of Music at 964-4159.
