Wal-Mart not the evil empire people make it out to be

Letter to the Editor

For months now people and organizations have been bashing Wal-Mart, America's largest retailer, for practicing unfair business. Hearing all this complaining is enough to make me sick. America is a country founded on the ideals that everyone should live how they choose. Why begrudge Wal-Mart for making money?

In the research I have done, I have found more positive things to say about Wal-Mart than negative, yet I have heard Wal-Mart referred to as an "Evil Empire" more times than I can count. My opinion is that people just do not appreciate success when the success is not theirs to enjoy. It would be nice to have the success that Wal-Mart has enjoyed, but most of us do not have that level of success.

Wal-Mart is leading the corporate drive to assist in relief efforts, with $17 million in cash donations to aid emergency relief efforts including $15 million to the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, $1 million to the Salvation Army and $1 million to the American Red Cross. Additionally, Wal-Mart provided $3 million worth of merchandise and donations throughout Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas to shelters and command centers.

Wal-Mart has also supported those in need in Texas by contributing more than $1 million to Governor Perry's Hurricane Rita Fund. How can we find fault in a company that is clearly doing a lot of good in helping those areas ravaged by this year's terrible hurricanes?

It seems that no matter what Wal-Mart does, the company is still unappreciated by many. As for me, I like Wal-Mart. I shop there all the time. I am very appreciative for what they have done to help the hurricane-ravaged areas in the South. Wal-Mart has a slogan people should read and take more seriously: "We're committed to the communities we serve. We live here too, and we believe good works." Evil Empires are self-serving, not philanthropic like Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart should be free to enjoy their success without worrying about whiny people.
