SVSU Foundation awards grant to summer creative writing camp
December 12, 2005 —
Several SVSU faculty members and students were recently awarded a grant that will help fund a creative writing workshop for middle school children tentatively scheduled for this summer. The grant is for approximately $4300 and is funded by the SVSU Foundation.
Faculty members and students joined forces to write the grant which will bring 30 area students to campus for a weeklong workshop designed in part to help them practice their creative writing. The workshop will be geared towards poetry and will conclude at the end of the week with a poetry reading.
The English department's Chris Giroux is actively involved in the program and says that, though local kids will get to hone their skills, the real purpose of the workshop is to help SVSU students.
"I think people tend to focus on the fact that we're doing some outreach with the community," Giroux said, "but this really is an opportunity for SVSU students to develop and refine their skills."
The grant's title is, "Cardinals' Creativity Camp': Promoting Leadership in Saginaw Valley State University Students." SVSU students will play an active role throughout the camp, teaching the participants involved.
