Drums majors Amanda King and Dustin Mallory led the SVSU Cardinal Marching Band in their 30th Annual Indoor Concert on Monday, Nov. 21 in the Performing Arts Theatre.
The program opened with the proud Cardinal Fight Song and the Star Spangled Banner. SVSU students and family of the band members gathered together at this free concert to hear the songs that were played for the 2005 football season.
The first set of tunes was performed at the first show of the season that featured the songs "I Have a Dream/Mamma Mia," "Dancing Queen," and "The Winner Takes It All." Dan Luce, trumpet, soloed in "The Winner Takes It All" for Christina Hill because she had to go to the hospital.
Assisting the band were the flag corps who danced front stage, dazzling the audience with batons, twirls and class.
The second set of songs was from the halftime show of the second football game. They included "Salute to Freedom," "Accidentally in Love," and "Harry's Wondrous World."
The drum line was featured next, led by their captain, Ben Mackey. The percussionists were in full uniform, adding sunglasses as their own sense of style and individuality.
The drum line was given an opportunity to play at Temple Theatre to kick off one of the benefit concerts held by Morley Company several months ago. As a result, the company donated money to them to buy much needed percussion equipment.
After the drum line feature, the Marching Band played the selections performed for Homecoming. "Makana" was an original by SVSU student Scott Tuttle. They also played "In the Stone" and "Isn't She Lovely," where Melissa Croll soloed on her alto saxophone.
Concluding the program was four tunes that were brought back from a show performed ten years ago. It was such a successful hit that Band Director William B. Wollner decided it would be fun to do again. Such songs included the famous "Phantom of the Opera," "The Music of the Night," "Masquerade," and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again."
Wollner graciously thanked his two drum majors, section leaders, athletic director, music department chair, department secretary, Dining Services and volunteers for all of their dedication, love and support.
"What a joy it has been to work with them," he said. "They have worked really hard to put the band on the field."
