Local colleges combine efforts for 'Return to Learn' event at SVSU
December 5, 2005 —
Six colleges and universities with local programs of study will participate in a "Return to Learn" night at SVSU today from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Groening Commons.
The event is aimed at adults who have previously earned college credit but have not completed a college degree. Michigan ranks above the national average in terms of the percentage of people who fall into this category.
Representatives from the participating institutions will be on hand to speak directly with prospective students about how their credits may apply toward completing a degree.
Governor Jennifer M. Granholm declared November as "Return to Learn" month in Michigan. She also has set a goal of doubling the number of college graduates in the state over the next decade.
"There are no two ways about it - when you learn more, you earn more," Granholm said in a release. "Not only do individuals prosper, but Michigan's economy grows stronger when we raise the education level of our workforce."
Institutions participating in the event are: CMU, Davenport, Delta College, Northwood, SVSU, and Spring Arbor University.
"Our 'Return to Learn' campaign is really just getting started," said Lt. Governer John Cherry. "These institutions have an ongoing commitment to welcoming back adult learners and giving them the support they need to finish their degrees."
SVSU has appointed Rebecca Dewald as its "Return to Learn" coordinator to meet individually with adults interested in returning to college. For more information about SVSU's programs, visit www.svsu.edu/return.
