Northwood beats men in OT
October 31, 2005 —
The SVSU men's soccer team finished their season with a heartbreaking overtime loss to Northwood yesterday 3-2. The Cardinals finished their season 3-11-2 with a 2-7-1 record in the GLIAC.
Northwood opened up the game with a flurry of shots in the first five minutes. Overall, Northwood had 17 shots to SVSU's 13. Sophomore goalkeeper Eric Carnes made eight saves for the Cardinals.
Northwood struck first, scoring on an overlapping pass at 13:48. But later in the half, Saginaw Valley evened up the score at 37:40, in what appeared to be a Northwood own goal that was credited to the Cardinals' Ryan Seelhoff. Just before halftime, senior Cale Wasserman narrowly missed a diving header in the 44th minute that would have given the Cardinals the lead going into halftime.
A handball in the penalty box eventually led to SVSU's second goal at 62:13, when Wassermann knocked in a penalty kick to give SVSU a 2-1 lead. However, the lead soon evaporated at 70:22, when the Timberwolves scored on a breakaway goal that tied up the score.
Both teams had two yellow cards each, and both teams had 22 fouls in the game. Northwood was flagged for ten offsides penalties, and SVSU got caught breaking too early once.
Both defenses clamped down for the last 20 minutes of regulation, which sent the game to extra time. In overtime, a defensive miscue by SVSU led to Northwood eventually scoring at 98:33 to end the game.
It was a disappointing season for the Cardinals, who are guaranteed no better than a last-place finish in the GLIAC.
Jared Riepma led the team on the season with six goals, with Wassermann second on the team with four goals. Riepma and Wassermann also led the team in total points, with 14 and 10, respectively.
