Students, staff aiding Katrina victims

A group of 11 SVSU nursing students and six SVSU employees have taken a trip to Mississippi and the Gulf Coast to assist with ongoing Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. They will spend four days distributing food, cleaning homes, and performing community assessments where they will evaluate residents' access to health care.

In recent weeks, the students have been collecting needed items, such as food, nursing equipment, and school supplies. In addition, Unique Uniforms donated scrubs for Southern nursing students whose clothes were lost. All of the supplies will be distributed to residents and students in need.

Among the SVSU employees making the trip will be Mamie Thorns, SVSU special assistant to the president for diversity programs, who originally hails from Brandon, Miss.

Other employees making the trip are: Mary Blackmer of Cadillac, preceptor in the nurse practitioner program; Averetta Lewis of Saginaw, professor of nursing; Marilyn McFarland of Bay City, an adjunct instructor of nursing; Mary Solterman of Lexington, an adjunct instructor of nursing; and Carol Vos of Bay City, associate coordinator of parish nursing

The participating students, all nursing majors, are: Allison Jennings from Frankenmuth, Laura Johnson from Chesaning, Jessica McDonald from Birch Run, Katie McPherson from Flushing, Jennifer Muzzy from Freeland, Amy Ockerman from Davison, Charlene Pickelhaupt from Port Huron, Katie Terry from Sterling Heights, and Katie Kreh, Linde McCubbin, and Scott Schlaud from Saginaw.
